Acne Myths

Myth #1 - Acne is caused by eating the wrong foods

Fact: There are no wrong foods. Chocolate and french fries may be considered notorious villains when it comes to acne, but after numerous scientific studies no evidence has been found to link diet to acne.

Dermatologists do advise, however, that if you notice a tendency to break out after eating a certain food, reduce or eliminate it from your diet and see if it helps reduce your acne.

So while you won't have to give up your favorite snack, remember that a well-balanced diet is good for overall health.
Myth #2 - Acne is caused by poor hygiene

Fact: It's not poor hygiene, it's hormones. In fact, washing your face too often or too vigorously can actually make your acne worse.

The real culprits are hormonal imbalances that appear at puberty and occasionally at different stages of adult life including pregnancy and menopause. Whatever the age though, the outcome is the same: excess production of skin oils or sebum. Match that up to increased shedding of dead skin cells and you have clogged pores and the resulting pimples on a clean face.

Gently wash your face in the morning and evening with a mild cleanser and then pat it dry. Scrubbing or rubbing your face can lead to dry skin and irritated acne. That means delayed healing and worse, more breakouts. So treat your skin with care to help it heal. If you exercise hard and sweat a lot you may want to wash your face afterwards.
Myth #3- Acne is a cosmetic disease

Fact: It's true that acne does affect how we look and at the same time does not pose a serious threat to our physical health. In that sense you can call it a cosmetic disease. On the other hand, acne can lead to permanent physical scarring. It can also seriously affect the way some people feel about themselves and how they interact with others. This invisible side of acne can express itself in feelings of embarrassment, frustration or depression and result in decreased self-esteem and social withdrawal.
Myth #4 - You should not wear makeup if you have acne

Fact: Looking your best can make you feel your best so you'll be glad to know that you actually can wear makeup if you have acne. Just remember, try to use cosmetic and skin care products that are labeled noncomedogenic or nonacnegenic (won't clog pores or cause breakouts). Some concealers contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Both ingredients help to fight acne. You might also find that tinted acne-fighting creams can help get rid of pimples while hiding them. You may have noticed more and more skin care products labeled "organic," "all natural" or "herbal" coming onto the market. However, these cosmetics may, in fact, clog pores and make your acne worse. Stop using any cosmetic or skin care product that seems to be irritating your skin or causing breakouts. Talk with your dermatologist to see what adjustments can be made to improve your treatment and speed you on your way to clear, healthy skin.
Myth #5 - Stress causes acne

Fact: Your regular, every day variety of stress is not an important factor in acne. Rather, some drugs used to treat severe stress may cause acne as a side effect. If you think your acne is caused by a medication prescribed for stress or depression, you should talk to your doctor.
Myth #6 - You should not shave if you have acne

Fact: You can, in fact, shave. Be sure to use either a safety or electric razor and be attentive to your skin. Shave lightly around blemishes to avoid nicking the skin and inviting irritation and infection. Remember to replace your safety razor on a regular basis.
Myth #7 - Acne is a problem only for teenagers

Fact: It is true that most teenagers have acne and that many cases will clear up during a person's early 20s. Sometimes, however, acne can persist into the 30s and 40s. A large percentage (82%) of both the men and women with severe acne reported that it was a carry over from their teen years. Others develop acne for the first time as adults. Treatment during your teen years may minimize scarring and improve your acne before you hit your 20s.
Myth #8 - Acne appears only on the face

Fact: Acne can occur on many parts of the body. It is common for people to have acne on their back, chest and neck. These areas of the body have a high concentration of oil glands just as the face does. Body acne can be treated just as successfully as facial acne.
Myth #9 - Getting a tan will help clear up acne

Fact: You may be tempted to get some rays since a tan can minimize your blemishes and make your skin feel drier, but getting a tan will make your acne worse in the long run. Sunbathing dries your skin, causing your sebaceous glands to produce more sebum (oil exuded from the pores). In addition, sun exposed skin sloughs old cells more frequently. And that's the formula for clogged pores and acne.

Tanning makes your skin age prematurely and can put you at a much greater risk for skin cancer. So anytime you're going to be outside, be sure to use a noncomedogenic sunscreen with at least an SPF 15 protection level.
Myth #10 - Washing your face a lot will help get rid of pimples

Fact: Acne is not caused by poor hygiene. It's good to wash your face each day to get rid of dead skin cells, excess oil and surface dirt, but washing your face more than once or twice a day can be too much of a good thing.

If you wash too frequently or too abrasively you can dry and irritate your skin into more breakouts. So don't scrub or rub. Gently wash your face with a mild cleanser no more than once or twice a day and pat it dry with care.
Myth #11 - Popping pimples will make them go away faster

Fact: No matter how tempting, you should not scratch, pick, squeeze or pop a pimple. Doing so may push bacteria from the pimple further into the skin, causing more inflammation. Popping a pimple may also cause brown or red scars to appear that can last for months or worse yet, popping pimples can cause dents and pits that can last forever.
Myth #12 - Using extra acne medication will make your acne go away faster

Fact: More is not necessarily better. In fact, it can worsen your acne. Many over-the-counter acne treatments contain active ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Too much of either of these can cause your skin to become excessively dry or irritated which in turn may lead to more blemishes. Results are generally seen in a few weeks, but may take up to 8 weeks or more. Use the medication exactly as directed, and if you don't see any improvement talk with your dermatologist.
Myth #13 - All acne medications are the same

Fact: All acne medications are not created equal. It is important to know that over-the- counter acne products and prescription medications all contain different active ingredients. Each product or drug is designed to target a specific cause of acne and degree of severity as well as to accommodate a given skin type. Some acne treatments reduce oiliness, others decrease the amount of dead skin cells that are shed and still others attack the bacteria responsible for the breakouts, Propionibacterium acnes, (P. acnes). Some medications combine two or more acne-busting agents to attack multiple causes of acne. Over-the-counter and prescription medications come in various forms that can make a difference in their effectiveness and your comfort. They can be topical (applied to the skin) or systemic (taken orally). Oral medications are available by prescription only. Acne products and medications can come as creams, lotions, gels, solutions, pads and foam. Creams and lotions provide moisture and are generally better for people with sensitive or dry skin, while gels and solutions may be best for people who live in hot, humid climates or who have oily skin. Foam offers increased spreadability. If you have difficulty finding the right acne-fighting product for your skin, talk with your dermatologist who can steer you in the right direction.
Myth #14 - Acne medication should only be put right on top of the blemish

Fact: Spot treatment may work on reducing an existing blemish, but it won't treat new breakouts. Apply a thin layer of your topical medication over all the areas where there are breakouts to treat and eliminate both visible and invisible lesions.
Myth #15 - Oily skin is the main cause of pimples

Fact: Oily skin is just one of the causes of pimples. The other contributing factors include rapid and irregular shedding of dead skin cells, the presence of a normal skin bacteria known as Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) and inflammation.

The hormonal onset of puberty signals the onset of acne. Hormones cause the sebaceous glands to exude oil through the pores and increase the rate at which dead skin cells are shed. The accumulating skin cells and oil stick together and form a soft plug that clogs the skin pore. This mixture of oil and cells makes a perfect environment for the growth of a normal skin bacteria known as Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes). The bacteria multiplies inside the clogged pore and causes the inflammation that you experience as redness and heat.
Myth #16- Blackheads are caused by dirt

Fact: That is not dirt you are looking at and it cannot be scrubbed away. Whiteheads and blackheads are simply pores that have become plugged with a mixture of oil and dead skin cells. Whiteheads reside just below the surface of the skin while blackheads are enlarged plugs that have pushed through the skin's surface. The material inside the pore turns dark when it is exposed to the air.
Myth #17 - You must let acne run its course

Fact: Acne can be treated and you can have healthy skin. With all the acne products available today there is absolutely no reason to endure acne or to allow untreated acne to result in scars. If you are frustrated with the acne treatments you've tried, talk with a dermatologist to help you find the right therapy and get you on track for clear skin.
Myth #18 - Acne is contagious

Fact: Acne is a result of hormonal influences and is not contagious.
Myth #19 - Acne can't be controlled

Fact: Acne can definitely be controlled. There is a wide range of both over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription acne medicines currently available. And while some OTC products may be more effective than others, dermatologists have acne treatments that are available by prescription which may heal existing blemishes and treat new ones. With a little patience and attention, you may enjoy clear, healthy skin.
Myth #20 - If the pimples do not clear up in a day or two, the medication is not working

Fact: Be patient. Healing acne takes time. It is important to be realistic when you are trying to find a successful acne treatment. Don't be tempted by overnight promises, you want to look for the best treatment.

Simple whiteheads or blackheads can be cleared up in days or weeks. More serious lesions may take longer to heal.

Acne Tips

Don't Scrub

You can't scrub your acne away. In fact abrasive or frequent washing can lead to dry skin and irritated acne. Your skin will respond best to kind attention. Gently wash your face no more than twice a day with a mild cleanser and pat your skin dry with a clean towel. If you exercise hard and sweat a lot you may want to wash your face afterwards.
Gently Cleanse

Use a mild cleanser no more than twice a day and gently wash and dry your skin. Apply a noncomedogenic (won't clog your pores) sunscreen.
Don't Pop Pimples

The temptation to scratch, pick, squeeze or pop a pimple can be intense, but the consequences just are not worth it. You run the risk of pushing the bacteria from the pimple further into the skin and causing more breakouts.

Popping a pimple may also cause brown or red scars to appear that can last for months. In severe acne cases popping pimples may cause dents and pits that can last forever.
Use Only Noncomedogenic Products

When purchasing cosmetics, sunscreen or other skin care products, make sure the label reads noncomedogenic. These products, as well as those labeled nonacnegenic, won't clog your pores and therefore won't cause or make your acne worse.
Patience is a Virtue

Be patient. Healing takes time. Unfortunately this doesn't happen overnight. Results are generally seen in a few weeks, but may take up to 8 weeks or more. Don't be tempted by over night promises. So give your acne treatment a fighting chance.
Use Sunscreen

Many acne medications contain ingredients that can make your skin extra sensitive to sunlight and ultraviolet light from tanning booths. Read the label warnings, avoid tanning booths, and always use a sunscreen with at least an SPF of 15. Sun exposure can actually irritate acne even if you are not using an acne medication. So don't make sunbathing a part of your lifestyle and always use sunscreen.
More is Not Better

If you use more acne medication than directed by your doctor you can actually worsen your acne. Many over-the-counter acne treatments contain active ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Too much of either of these can cause your skin to become excessively dry or irritated. It can take time for your skin to adapt to new medications. Remember that it may take up to 8 weeks for any acne medication to have a noticeable effect. Use the medication exactly as directed by your doctor and if you don't see an improvement within 8 weeks talk with your dermatologist.
Consult a Dermatologist

A dermatologist is a doctor who specializes in conditions of the skin. If you are having a hard time treating your acne successfully, it might be best to visit a dermatologist. A dermatologist will be able to evaluate your individual skin type and recommend an acne treatment that is best for you.
Here's the Rub

Headbands and hats can aggravate your acne as they rub against your forehead. Try to avoid these things when possible.
Don't Touch Your Face

It's amazing how often we touch our faces during an average day. Our hands have oil on them and of course bacteria too, both of which can make acne worse. So avoid touching your face or leaning your chin on your hand. Be sure that other objects that come in contact with your face like cell phones, telephone receivers, eye glasses, etc are clean.
Wash Your Hair Frequently

If your hair is long enough to touch your face, you'll want to wash it as often as necessary to keep the oils away. If you can't avoid hair sprays or gels altogether, try to keep them and your hair away from your face because they can clog pores.
Review Your Environment

Pollution, airborne grease (such as in a fast food restaurant), irritating clothing - all these can aggravate your acne. It isn't always possible to avoid all the various irritants that may contribute to your acne. You can, however, make educated decisions that may help to minimize their impact. Loosen tight, irritating clothing or find fabrics that breathe better and don't aggravate your acne.

Home treatment for acne offers many treatment possibilities. If you decide that home treatment for acne is something you want to try you may need some information.

One home treatment for acne can involve changes in your diet. Many people find that home treatment for acne that includes dietary changes is very successful. When using this home treatment for acne you should eliminate sugar, caffeine, processed foods and foods that contain a lot of iodine.

Another home treatment for acne is one that consists of adding supplements every day. Some of these supplements include vitamins, brewer’s yeast, zinc and chromium.

A home treatment for acne that has worked for some people is aloe. You can use this in gel or juice form. You can try apple cider as a cleanser as a home treatment for acne. Another home treatment for acne is cleaning your face with egg whites.

Try making an oatmeal mask as a home treatment for acne. Apply cooked and cooled oatmeal to your face and let it sit for fifteen minutes. You can use a peeled cucumber that has been liquefied in the blender as a home treatment for acne. Just apply it to the area that is affected with acne.

Witch hazel sometimes is effective as a home treatment for acne. Put a little witch hazel on a cotton ball after you have cleaned your face. As part of this home treatment for acne you should then apply a 2% salicylic acid product.

The sun is considered a good home treatment for acne by some people. The ultraviolet light kills the bacteria and dries up the oil.

Sometimes a home treatment for acne is as effective as alternate treatments.

Make Superior Skin Cleansers at Home

Are you tired of paying top-dollar for skin cleansers that never work? Then follow these recipes for home remedy skin cleansers, and never waste money on inferior products again.

For your body, the best ingredient you can use is sea salt. Mix it with water to the consistency of paste, and rub it on your knees, elbows and feet to remove dead skin. For more sensitive skin, grind oatmeal flakes in a clean coffee grinder, mix with brown sugar, aloe, and lemon juice.

Oatmeal can also be mixed with yogurt to create an effective facial cleanser. For a facial scrub, mix yogurt and walnuts (finely ground). Mix witch hazel and rosemary for a refreshing facial toner.

Facial masks are also easy to make at home. Experiment with ingredients such as oatmeal, honey, and mashed fruits and veggies such as cucumbers, strawberries, or peaches.

Looking for the benefits of Alpha hydroxy-acids, but tired of paying the price? Don’t worry – these acids are found naturally in papayas, pineapples, oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits, apples, and sugar cane. You can puree or mash any combination of these and mix it with sugar or milk for a mask that can be left on for up to 30 minutes.

Vitamin C is also great for your skin, and it can be found in citrus fruits as well as veggies such as peppers, broccoli, tomatoes, and sweet potatoes.

Experiment with combos to achieve your own personal recipe. It won’t take long to find the aroma and consistency you prefer, and your skin will look and feel great!

Herbal and Other Treatments as a Cure for Acne

The best acne cures are often at your fingertips.

Instead of relying on the foods you eat , you can begin taking B5 vitamin supplements. B5 plays two very integral roles in reducing acne and is thought of as being one of the best acne cures..

Vitamin B5 it cuts down on overproduction of oil in the skin and secondly, it helps to reduce the size of pores on the face.

Herbal medications also fall under the category of best acne cures.

The herbs chamomile, dandelion root, burdock root, juniper and lavender when combined in a variety of different ways have helped many acne sufferers with their skin conditions.

Herbal solutions help by cutting down on toxicity levels in the body as well as work as a natural anti-inflammatory for skin lesions.

Another cure for acne is "oral contraceptives".

This birth control method works double duty as an acne preventative because "the pill" contains hormones that lessen the production of something called androgen.

Too much androgen in the body encourages the growth of acne.

You can also consider another one of the best acne cures. I am talking about a topical solution called the Reversion Acne Control System.

This unique process is, Reversion Acne Control System, easy to use.

This is one of the best acne cures because it launches an assault on the affected areas of skin in many different places, not just on specific patches of skin.

The elasticity of skin can also very efficiently be improved upon with this system of treatment.

Acne Prevention-5 Tips to Stop Acne Early

To prevent acne you need to first understand the cause of acne.

Acne occurs when hairs follicles become clogged and then infected. Hair follicles secrete an oil that lubricates the hair shaft, this secretion is perfectly normal. The problem occurs when the oil glands produce too much oil, this extra oil can get trapped by the pore around the hair follicle. If the pore seals up it allows bacteria to grow beneath the skin. This bacteria then irritates the skin causing what we all no as a pimple. If the acne becomes severe it can form cysts below the skin, this type of acne is called cystic acne. Cystic acne is identified for being swollen, red, and can be painful. Now that the cause of acne is understood, what are ways to prevent it?

1. First and foremost do not pop your pimples. Squeezing pimples can cause your acne to become worse, There is increased chances of infection, also you may push pus in the pimple deeper into the skin. This increases your chance of developing cystic acne.

2. Everyone should wash your face twice daily. When washing your face do not scrub your skin, this could cause your acne to become worse. A gentle cleaning twice per day is sufficient.

3. Try to avoid areas where food is being fried. Frying food causes the grease to become airborne it then settles onto your skin. With this grease on your skin the chances of clogged pores increase.

4. Girls should avoid using cosmetics that are oil based, this will also lead to clogged pores. Girls should also remember to remove all make-up each night before bed.

5. Last but not least is starting early, these tips can be even more helpful if you start them before your acne has a chance to get started. All teens will have acne at some point, don't wait to use these only when you have an outbreak.

By taking advantage of these tips you can win the battle with acne. There are also many great products to help you along the way.

Acne Control Natural Ways to Overcome Acne

Acne control is a struggle for many teens. This disorder comes about when the sebaceous glands, or oil glands, become overactive and produce excess oil. As a result, the pores in the skin become clogged. Acne control can be most difficult when dealing with the face, shoulders, chest, and back because these areas contain most of the oil glands.

There are many forms of acne control. Many are in the form of acne medications. Fortunately, there are several less expensive forms of acne control as well.

First, individuals needing acne control should eat healthier. Fruits and vegetables are a necessary part of a balanced diet and assist the body in acne control. Along with eating healthy foods, people also should drink lots of water to promote acne control. Doing so flushes the system and keeps the skin hydrated.

Next, taking multivitamins can assist in acne control. Multivitamins contain zinc which aids the body in acne control as well. Next, minimizing the use of makeup is another form of acne control. Wearing too much makeup can clog the pores, so limiting the use makeup can prevent outbreaks.

Another form of acne control is to use rose water to cleanse the face. People also can use a cucumber mask in order to rid the pores of excess oil. Instead of spending money on acne products these natural remedies can be just as effective for acne control.

All of these tips can be effective forms of acne control. Although they do work for some, they may not work for everyone. Before you spend hundreds of dollars on acne medications, take a trip to your local grocery store- the natural remedies you find can be your answer for acne control.

Acne Control Medication

When I was an adolescent it was believed that a poor diet contributed to aggravating acne outbreaks. Now over twenty years later I have read many articles that stated that diet has no effect at all on acne. So in other words diet as a natural treatment for acne does not have a positive or negative effect.

For years we have been told we are what we eat and I believe that our skin is a reflection of our health and therefore a natural acne treatment is often a cure.

It is said that for many people with other more severe outbreaks, home remedies for acne are not a solution for their problems. This is usually encouraged for the sale of expensive medications to treat a problem that could be taken care of relatively inexpensively.

There are prescription acne medications that you take by mouth as well as prescribed topical medications that may help more serious acne problems. Some of them work as a treatment but never cure acne.

The problem with taking many prescribed acne medications is that they can have many uncomfortable side effects where as natural acne treatments rarely have any at all. Sometimes your body adjust to the acne medications that you are taking, however when you stop taking acne medications your outbreaks start all over again.

Herbal acne products and medications normally do not have this effect. Home remedies for acne specifically tea tree oil, Benzoyl peroxide and good old fashioned tooth paste worked better than the most expensive prescribed acne medications and you do not have to worry about scarring like you sometimes do with harsh prescription acne medications.

People with severe acne problems are often prescribed an aggressive acne treatment using antibiotics to take care of the bacteria problem that may be causing and aggravating their acne.

The problem with using Antibiotics like tetracycline as an acne treatment is your body builds up an immunity over time to the acne medication and no longer works and causes more bacteria to grow therefore causing breakouts and often worse than before. The good thing is a natural acne treatment may be the best because your bodies immune system heals itself.

It is best to make wise choices when it comes to choosing an acne treatment. Remember that there are many wonderful products on the market but you have to be careful to create for yourself the best natural acne treatment for you. Your skin may not respond the same way to some treatments for acne as it may have for someone else. So be wise, be watchful and be aware.

Balancing Prostaglandins for Acne Control

There are two main groups of hormones that are neccessary to balance if you want to effectively treat and cure your acne.

The first type of hormones, androgens, are responsible for the regulation of sebum (skin oil). Your body creates acne when you have too much sebum mixed with other elements such as toxins in the blood and dead skin cells that clog up the skins pores.

Bacteria breeds in the blocked pores which create redness, inflammation and swelling which is your acne.

Prostaglandins are hormone-like substances which are produces in cells as chemical messengers. Prostaglandins are the important hormones that are responsible for inflammatory and anti-inflammatory responses in the cells otherwise known as 'good' and 'bad' prostaglandins.

So the question is, how does someone regulate prostaglandins hormones in the body?

Most people lack the nutrients the body needs to produce enough 'good' prostaglandins while on the other hand produce too many of the 'bad' type which is why acne sufferers more often than not have inflammed, red and sore spots on their faces that take longer than normal to reduce.

ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) which is an Omega 3 essential fatty acid is the precursor to 'good' prostaglandins. Most americans are simply deficient in Omega 3 efa's.

Most animal products and household oils have very high amounts of Omega 6 efa's but very little if any Omega 3. Omega 6 is the building block for 'bad' prostaglandins.

Two of the best sources of Omega 3 acids are in fish oil and flax seed oil. Flax seed oil is great because it has a 2-1 ratio of Omega 3 which is good to counter the inbalance of these EFA's people have had most of their lives.

It would be a good idea to take enzymes with these oils to make sure they are broken down and utilized properly. Considering most americans also have an enzyme deficiency it would be a wise decision.

Alternatively, you may want to take flax/fish oil capsules with fruits that are high in enzymes such as bananas, papaya, pineapple, figs and kiwi fruit.

One of the biggest theifs of prostaglandins is stress. Smoking and other things that create free radicals, attack the chemicals that are used in the biosynthesis of prostaglandins.

6 Steps to Clear, Acne-Free Skin

6 Steps to Clear, Acne-Free Skin

Hundreds of medications, treatments, cleansers and cosmetics are available for people with acne, but the most important elements of an acne-fighting program won’t cost you a cent.

1. Nourish your skin by eating a healthy and balanced diet.

Most health care specialists agree that a healthy diet will benefit your skin. Cut down on caffeine, sugar and refined carbohydrates, all of which can activate the hormones that tell your sebaceous glands to produce more oil. Add more fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, juices and other healthy treats to your daily diet, and you’ll see in improvement in your skin.

2. Drink lots of water to maintain the skin's elasticity.

Plenty of water is essential to the health of your skin. One of the main activities of the body’s self-healing system is to filter the blood, a job performed mostly by the kidneys, with help from the skin in the form of perspiration. This self-healing system removes the toxic wastes of metabolizing food and of other harmful substances that get into our bodies one way or another.

This purification system operates efficiently only if the volume of water flowing through it is sufficient to carry away the wastes. 6 to 8 glasses (64 fluid ounces) of water a day is the recommendation. To reach your quota, carry bottled water with you in your car, your purse, your briefcase—wherever you go.

Get the water habit, and your skin will thank you for it.

3. Exercise regularly for good circulation.

Get into a regular routine of exercise. Do it for at least half an hour, five days a week. Exercise improves your blood circulation, helping your body clear toxins from your system, including your skin. Better circulation also increases the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to your skin. Exercise also relieves stress, which is a common cause of acne flare-ups. Last but not least, exercise releases endorphins, the "feel good" substance in your brain that puts a smile on your face—the best beauty secret of all.

4. Cleanse your face—then tone, moisturize, and exfoliate.

At night
* First remove your makeup with an oil-free makeup remover and a cotton ball.
* Then wash your face with lukewarm water and an oil-free, non-comedogenic (doesn’t block pores) cleanser.
* Pat (don’t rub) it dry with a soft towel.
* And apply an oil-free moisturizer.

In the morning
* Wash your face as directed above, then use an alcohol-free toner.
* Next apply moisturizer.
* Then apply makeup—all oil-free and non-comedogenic.

Once or twice a week use an exfoliator with alpha hydroxy acid or glycolic acid. This will aid in the shedding of dead skin cells, the “food” for the bacteria that cause pimples.

If you exercise during the day, you’ll need to wash your face a third time, immediately afterward.

5. Protect your skin from the sun and harsh weather.

One popular myth about acne is that tanning will clear it. It may seem so at first, but soon you will notice that your tanned skin becomes less pliable, making it less able to shed oil and dead skin cells, which clog your pores. Your acne will become worse, not better.

Always wear sun block with at least an SPF-15 UVA & UVB rating. If you’ll be outside in the sun for long, wear a wide-brimmed hat.

6. Get plenty of good-quality rest.

Your immune system requires energy to do its work, including the work of protecting your skin from acne. The deep sleep the brain needs for “recharging” comes several hours into the sleep cycle. That’s why a few hours here and there won’t do. Most people need at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep a night. Consider it beauty sleep.

If you make these 6 items part of your daily routine, you’ll look better, feel better, and have less need of expensive acne treatments and cosmetics.

How Can You Control Your Acne

Do you feel awkward when you get new spots? Just how are you supposed to control this acne? A good many people either smother themselves in makeup or go into hiding for a little while! But what causes these spots to appear?

Basically, you’ll find acne is established around the tiny hair follicles that are around your face. Inside these hair follicles, you’ll find an oil gland, commonly known as the sebaceous gland. Now and again, you’ll get dead cells that will clog up your hair follicles and this will cause the bacteria on your face to multiply and feed off these oils, called sebum, and the dead cells. This results in the swelling of your hair follicle, which sees infection set in and the bacteria reproducing. All this leads to that little red spot that is the bane of a teenager’s existence!

All this takes place deep within your hair follicle, therefore surface acne treatments can only help so much in averting these clogs. Actually, if you wash with acne treatments that utilize harsh chemicals and abrasives, then this can lead to your skin producing even more oil, and as it is dried out, this could result in you having worse acne than you began with!

Hair follicles that are functioning normally and skin that is being looked after by a good care schedule will usually need no treatment at all. But there are occasions during our lives that may set off acne; first of all, the cycling of our hormones can lead to plenty of oil on our skin, for guys this usually takes place during puberty and then diminishes. For the gals, this also starts during puberty, however many ladies can also experience problems through their monthly cycles. Pregnancy is a period of intense hormonal changes, and many women turn to acne treatment throughout this period too.

Extreme stress is another possible trigger for acne; it increases your blood pressure and the oil production upon your face. Recent studies have shown that non-organic milk can lead to our growth hormones soaring; this can easily see the onset of acne. Another possible cause of acne is if you have a food allergy. If you do suspect a food can be the responsible for your acne, then simply try cutting it out for 2 weeks and observe if your acne fades away. If so, you have found an effective treatment for your acne!

Types of Acne

Acne comes in many forms. Although most commonly found on the face, acne ranges from Mild to Severe and can be located anywhere on the body. Most frequently self-treated, mild cases are manageable. However, severe cases should be treated under the supervision of health professionals, such as dermatologists.

Acne Vulgaris, translated as ‘common acne,’ is the most common type of acne. It is better known as blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules or cysts.

Blackheads - Occur in partially blocked pores. Dead skin cells, bacteria, and sebum (the substance that causes oily skin) drain to the surface of the skin; the pigments are exposed to air, which causes the black color. Blackheads can take a long time to clear up.

Whiteheads – Contained beneath the surface of the skin, the trapped sebum, dead cells and bacteria are completely blocked in the pores.

Pustules – With the appearance of a red circle with a white or yellow center, this form of acne is more often called Pimples or Zits.

Nodules – Much larger than other forms of acne, nodules form hard lumps beneath the surface of the skin which can be painful and last for several months. Highly susceptible to scarring, this form of acne is recommended to be treated by a dermatologist.

Cysts – Similar to a nodule, this form of acne is filled with pus. Like nodules, cysts can be very painful and lead to scarring if untreated. Cysts should be treated by a dermatologist.

Acne Conglobata – More common in males than females, this rare form of acne vulgaris is extremely disfiguring. Large lesions form on the face, chest, back, buttocks, upper arms, and thighs, sometimes accompanied by numerous blackheads. Acne Conglobata can cause severe psychological as well as physical suffering, damage to the skin and permanent scarring. This condition can last several years.

Acne Fulminans – A sudden case of Acne Conglobata, with a fever and aching joints. Generally treated with oral steroids.

Gram-Negative Folliculitis – A bacterial infection which causes pustules and cysts, this form of acne may be caused by long-term treatment of acne with antibiotics.

Pyoderma Faciale – Affecting only females usually between ages 20 and 40, most commonly in women who never had acne before, this type of acne consists of painful pustules, cysts and nodules on the face. Permanent scarring is potential. Generally clears up within a year.

Acne Rosacea – Notably affecting people over the age of 30, Acne Rosacea causes a red rash on the face. Pimples or other skin blemishes may also be present. This should not be confused with Acne Vulgaris as there are two different treatments for these types. Acne Rosacea occurs more frequently in women than men but is more severe in the men it affects.

What Is Acne

Acne is commonly known as pimples, it is a skin condition that commonly afflicts people during their teenage years. Acne pre-dominantly affects the face but can also show up on the back, neck, shoulders and chest. While most common in teenagers it can appear on adults as well. Neither race or gender is an indicator of acne as it affects male and female and all races equally.

The medical term for it is Acne Vulgaris. It can be diagnosed by the lesions that form on the skin. These lesions can take several different forms: blackheads, whiteheads and cysts. Cysts are formed when the pore becomes completely blocked. Acne is most common during puberty because at this time your body is creating an excess of sebum. Sebum is an oily substance designed to keep the hair and skin soft and lubricated. During puberty the production of sebum is greatly increased which can cause the skin to feel oily and clog pores.

During puberty there is also an increase in the production of follicle cells. Dead follicle cells mixed with sebum can build up and cause white heads. This mix of oil and dead cells is a perfect breeding ground for bacterial that will cause the swelling and redness associated with pimples.

Acne affects about 85% of all people sometime from the age of 12-24. Around 25% of these people will have acne on their back and/or neck as well as the face. The acne will be severe enough to cause about 40% of these people to seek medical treatment.

Acne is most common on the face, especially on the forehead, nose and chin. The back is the next most common area of affliction followed by the neck, chest and shoulders.

Most people will have outgrown their acne problems by the time they reach their twenty's, but some people will continue to suffer from acne even as adults. In some cases people will not have any acne issues until they are adults, this happens more frequently in men than women.

Acne can have severe emotional and psychological repercussions. Since it affects their appearance it also affects their self-image and self esteem. Teenagers are especially vulnerable to this attack on their self-confidence and can even trigger withdraw and depression, as well as feelings of anger and frustration.

Fortunately in this day and age there are many treatments that can help with acne. The foremost thing that can be done to help avoid or alleviate acne is to keep the skin as clean and oil free as possible. Washing the most common problem areas several times a day with soap and water, especially after any activity that triggers perspiration, is usually adequate. There are also many medications available by prescription and over the counter to help with acne control.

If the acne is severe enough you can consult a dermatologist, they can prescribe medications for the skin as well as antibiotics to help fight the bacteria. They can also offer advise on life style and diet changes that might help with the condition.
